Consultation on draft Queensland Fish Stocking Policy

Project overview

The draft policy for fish stocking in Queensland is now open for consultation. This policy has been developed to clarify current management arrangements for fish stocking in public and private waters in Queensland and is a deliverable under the Queensland Fish Stocking Action Plan 2019-2020, which was developed in consultation with stocking groups at the 2018 workshop.

We encourage you to provide your feedback via the channels on this site. You may submit feedback by completing the survey on this page, uploading a document via the submission form or by submitting your feedback through post or email. Contact details are available below. Consultation will remain open untill close of business 31 August 2020.

The draft policy paper can be downloaded from the document library on this page.

The policy will replace the current Freshwater Stocking in Queensland Position Paper which was released in 2007.

The key changes to the 2007 position paper include:

  • permitting the stocking of three new species - jungle perch, mangrove jack and sea mullet under strict conditions
  • clarifies the types of stocking which will be supported
  • clarifies Fisheries Queensland's position to not permit fish stocking of tidal waters of Queensland (rivers, bays and oceans)
  • introduces a risk-based assessment approach for assessing new stocking proposals and existing management plans when renewed
  • includes additional assessment criteria for higher risk activities
  • introduces a requirement for monitoring and evaluation of fish stocking management plans.

Following the consultation period, feedback will be considered and a final version approved.
